Ice Cube and Mike Epps say the Friday franchise is finally moving forward. They confirmed that they’re actively writing the script for the long-awaited next installment, titled Last Friday. The first new film in the series will come more than 30 years after the original “Friday” became a cultural phenomenon.
“We writing the script right now,” Cube said during an interview on Big Boy TV, noting that the franchise’s return comes with a major celebration event in the works as well.
Cube explained that casting will follow the same approach that shaped the original films — finding the right performers and letting them bring their own energy to the roles. He said the script comes first, but improvisation is part of the process once the actors are locked in.
“To me, when people say, ‘We ad-libbed the whole thing,’ I’m like, ‘Hold up — the script is laugh-out-loud funny before we even shoot it,’” Cube said. “It’s no shooting the script until everybody that read it is laughing.”
