Jasmine Guy is responding to criticism about her appearance after the A Different World sequel premiered on Netflix Thursday (September 24).
Guy, 64, reprises her role as Whitley Gilbert in the sequel, which premiered nearly four decades after the original series debuted in 1987 – and stars St. Louis’ own Cornell Young IV. Following the premiere, social media users began commenting on Guy’s appearance and how she has aged since the original show.
Guy took to social media with a message in response to the negative comments.
“The internet can be brutal to women as we grow older. It asks us to celebrate life while criticizing every sign that we’ve lived it,” Guy said via Instagram.
Her statement served as the caption of photos of her getting glammed up for promotional appearances and the show’s premiere.
“Growing older brings change, and I won’t pretend every change is easy. But beauty, style, and joy don’t have an expiration date,” Guy said. “Let’s spend less time judging ourselves and each other, and more time loving each other, making memories, and living the life we’re here to live.”
