My Halloween weekend didn’t kick off with a costume; it started with a concert. I stopped through City Winey to see what Q Parker’s solo mission was talking about with his Romance Dealer Tour. My boy DJ Kut kicked it off and I am over the moon to see him back on the tables. He got it in like he never left. I was a nervous wreck, because when the show was supposed to start it looked like The Romance Dealer was gonna be dishing out a hand of solitary. So, my big granny was the only one who never said solitaire? Anyway, the crowd took their time – but they did show up. Marcus Devine had to perform for me and the servers, but the folks moseyed on in after those trunk or treats wrapped up. He’s a singer/songwriter and I wasn’t the least bit mad at his little set. Now that X-rated remix of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do” was a bit much. But it prepared me for Q’s little nasty moment. By the time Q hit the stage he had a decent crowd. Let me find out “Rub Me The Right Way” was about Q’s mama…because Q was looking like Johnny Gill Jr. on that stage. The resemblance was uncanny as a mug. I’m not saying it as a diss, either. Q looked great and he sounded even better. He was super mannish. It was to the point where I was like, “I don’t remember 112 being this nasty…” Then I hit play on “You Already Know” on the way home. It turns out they were. I don’t want to make it seem like Q was serving up R&P (rhythm and pornography), but he was talking real NC-17. I thoroughly enjoyed it though. The only real note I have is not for him – but that loud woman by the door who decided that she was gonna aggravate all of us until Q gave her some attention. I was so grateful that he never did.

Jokin’ with Josh Johnson. On Halloween night I went to check out J-Boogie with the Hoodie aka comedian and “The Daily Show” host Josh Johnson for one of his three sold-out shows at The Factory. I’m so glad I followed my first mind and didn’t go Friday night. I heard that there was a trunk or treat at The District that impeded on the lot. Word on the curb is that folks were ready to tear the club up for a parking space. I didn’t have that problem at all. Me and Josh were about the size of the Black folks up in there, but we all had a ball. Josh’s fans’ reaction to his political jokes let me know exactly how these midterms were gonna shake. Every time he said something shady about 45 the folks were kicking and howling. He was funny – and was telling the truth – but they were sprawled all out whenever a “T word” read came up. When I told folks what was gonna happen for the 2016 election by the way Salt N Pepa got booed off the stage at Chaifetz Arena for saying something sideways about Trump, people said I didn’t know what I was talkin’ about. Turns out I was right both times. When I tell you Josh had my cheeks hurting. And I wasn’t mad at his little band camp format either. I was sounding like Sweets in “Coming To America” when he almost clapped his hands off for Randy Watson and Sexual Chocolate – except for they actually were really good. Shout out to the folks who chose optimum efficiency by wearing their Halloween costumes to The Factory so they could head out to beat the spooky streets. That was acceptable. Meanwhile I’m still praying for the woman who stood by her man when they went to the Martin Lawrence set with her boo dressed as Romey Rome.

Big ups to the blue wave. Now I had planned to talk about my Halloween shenanigans and how “post-apocalyptic prostitute” the most popular costume choice of 2026? Because I promise, no matter what was going on at the top, the bottoms consisted of boy shorts with the cheeks exposed paired with ripped up pantyhose and pumps as I beat the streets this weekend. However, I felt the need to mention the bottoms that actually deserve my attention. Keisha Lance Bottoms! She made history as the first Black woman governor elected…ever. It’s a shame that we had to wait until 2026, but here we are and I’m grateful. Now she’s representing for North Carolina, but I must shout out LaKesha Womack for making her own piece of history by having the Blackest name that I’m aware of to hit the U.S. House of Representatives! There were other wins that I don’t have space to mention. But just know that we did that at the polls…all across the nation. And we have a Governor Keisha…did y’all hear me?
