Saint Louis Dance Theatre company artist Demetrius Lee has been named a 2026 Princess Grace Award winner — one of the most prestigious honors available to emerging artists in the United States.
Each year, the Princess Grace Foundation‑USA selects just 18 recipients from nominations submitted by arts organizations and universities nationwide. The award recognizes early‑career artists in theater, dance, and film who demonstrate exceptional technical skill, artistic intentionality, and the promise of meaningful impact in their field. Since its founding in 1982, the Foundation has honored more than 1,000 artists — placing Lee among a select group whose work signals excellence and future leadership in American performance.
For Saint Louis Dance Theatre, the recognition marks a milestone moment. It underscores Artistic Director Kirven Douthit‑Boyd’s vision to cultivate world‑class dance artistry in St. Louis and position the city as a rising destination for nationally recognized talent.
Lee’s journey began far from the stage he now calls home. Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, he discovered dance at age 10 and committed himself to the discipline early. He trained at Cleveland Inner‑City Ballet before continuing at Cleveland School of the Arts and Tri‑C Creative Arts Academy. His dedication earned him a full‑ride scholarship to the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance.
After graduation, Lee toured Europe with Rock the Ballet under the direction of Adrienne Carterna‑Martinez. His training also includes work with San Francisco Ballet, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, American Dance Festival, and others. He has performed pieces by Christopher Huggins, Darrell Moultrie, Jamar Roberts, Stephanie Martinez, Annabelle Ochoa Lopez, Jiří Kylián, Kirven Douthit‑Boyd, Bill T. Jones, Jennifer Archibald, Thang Dao, and Dwight Rhoden.
Now entering his third season with Saint Louis Dance Theatre, Lee said the award reflects both gratitude and responsibility.
“I am a vessel using the gift of dance to connect, uplift, unify, and inspire,” he said.
The honor arrives as Saint Louis Dance Theatre prepares to enter its 16th season, Elements of Harmony. The season brings together four new creative collaborators whose individual experiences shape the tone, texture, and viewpoint of each work. Douthit‑Boyd said the company’s goal is to illuminate the many ways audiences can look at the world — with performances that guide the rhythm and pulse of the season while adding richness to the collective experience.
