Hampton University, aiming to close the racial gap in medical treatment, announced plans to build a $30- to $40-million biomedical center specializing in cancer research.
The center in Hampton, Va., will focus its research on breast cancer and prostate cancer, which disproportionately affect black Americans. The 64,000 square foot on-campus center will bring together researchers in biology, pharmacy, nursing and physics.
Hampton University is addressing the disparity in healthcare between blacks and whites, most recently joining an intercollegiate alliance to increase the number of minority doctors.
