Donald M. Suggs was inducted into the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame last Saturday during the Excellence in Communications Awards ceremony at Washington University. Suggs, president and publisher of the St. Louis American, was honored for “ground-breaking service in the field of communications.”

More than 30 area journalists received honors in radio, television, print, photojournalism and public relations categories.

The American won first-place awards in print for Best Series, Best Feature, Best Column and all four Photojournalism categories among papers with a circulation less than 100,000.

Tavia Evans, a business reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a former St. Louis American reporter, introduced Suggs and quoted the publisher’s guiding philosophy for the American: “We want to tell our people’s stories. African Americans should find themselves when they read our paper.”
