Former ESPN host and current lead host of 120 Sports, Michael Kim, who is a 1987 graduate of Westminster College, is encouraging high school students to take a look at the new sports and entertainment business management degree beginning at Westminster in the fall.
Kim, who played baseball for the Westminster Blue Jays during his undergraduate years, said this new degree provides a much easier path to a career in sports and entertainment than his.
“You’ll be prepared to work in the global entertainment and sports industries,” Kim said.
Students enrolled in the new program will study marketing, sales, financials, venues, operations, logistics, laws and management unique to sports and entertainment administered by one of the region’s top sports and entertainment industry leaders, Jack Croghan, former vice president of Business Development & Sports Sales for the Edward Jones Dome and former Marketing director for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Under the program, students will learn to manage sports and entertainment organizations with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and leadership. The program will recognize the connection of sports and entertainment to tourism and community and economic development. Students will be prepared for careers in industries like the sports commission, tourism and convention and visitors bureau.
Kim received an honorary degree from Westminster and gave the commencement address in 2008 and was awarded an Alumni Achievement Award in 2012. His father, Peter Kim, who was professor emeritus of Political Science at Westminster, passed away recently.
