This Saturday, October 29, Henry Townsend – the last surviving original bluesman of St Louis – will celebrate his 96th birthday at BB’s Jazz, Blues & Soups, 700 South Broadway. Helping him to celebrate will be next-in-line
legends like Robert Lockwood Jr., Silvercloud, Bennie Smith and many more.
Townsend has performed and recorded in every decade since 1929. He has outlived the greats that he knew as friends like Peetie Wheatstraw and
Big Joe Williams. Townsend was featured in a BBC documentary, has a
sidewalk star in the Delmar Loop and received the National Heritage Award in 1985. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with $10 admission. Call (314) 436-5222.
