“I’ve been turning on nostalgic TV because the trends are moving towards the pin up models,” said celebrity hair stylist and expert Da’Rico Jackson. “I was watching Mona Lisa Smiles and got excited about the 1920’s – 1950’s bobs and pin curls I want to use for my next shoot.”

Jackson, a St. Louis native, created the trendsetting bob worn by Tasha Smith in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married. Through Smith’s Angela character Jackson, created the desired hair standard among black women around the country.

This season, Jackson says that women will be inspired by the classic styles from the “Roaring 20’s” up through the cold war, but with a twist…and a ‘fro and a lock.

“The biggest trend right now is natural hair,” Jackson said. “It’s really nice to see because its captures the essence of who these people are.”

Ordinary Afrocentric styles will be modified by creating abstract shapes to add flare to the looks, such as Asymmetrical “Bobfros” and up-dos with texture.

“They are even showing white girls with afros and textured hair,” Jackson said laughing. “People will be using their products as opposed to chemicals and heat.”

But as women consider where their hair will fit among the blend of updos and blowouts that will be the spectrum of variation for black hair in 2010, Jackson offers advice that can apply to all women – whether their hair is relaxed or natural.

“Take into consideration lifestyle and profession,” Jackson said. “When selecting a particular style, women must ask themselves ‘Will I be able to maintain the look?’”
