St. Louis native Guy Torry built his career while creating opportunities for other Black comedians along the way.
Through his groundbreaking Phat Tuesdays showcases at Los Angeles’ Comedy Store, Torry helped open doors for a generation of comics. He also established a cultural institution that changed the trajectory of stand-up comedy.
Next week, he’ll lend that same spirit of service to the next generation.
The comedian, actor and producer will headline and host Comedy for a Cause. The fundraiser will benefit the Kirkwood Teachers of Color Scholarship. Presented by Kirkwood Teachers of Color (KTOC) in partnership with the Kirkwood School District Foundation, the event will raise money for scholarships supporting Kirkwood High School students as they pursue college, technical training and trade education opportunities.
While Torry serves as the evening’s headliner, the event will bring together a diverse lineup of entertainers committed to supporting the cause.
Among them is vocalist Malena Smith. Her soothing voice and engaging stage presence have made her a favorite with audiences throughout the region.
The lineup also includes fellow St. Louisan B-Phlat. The comedian, actress and radio personality whose larger-than-life personality and relatable humor have earned her fans nationwide. A veteran of stand-up, radio and television, she has spent years building a loyal following both on stage and behind the microphone.
Comedians Larry Greene and Tim Convy will also perform, with music provided by DJ VThom.
The event’s beneficiary reflects the same commitment to opportunity that has defined much of Torry’s career. Established in 2020 through the Kirkwood School District Foundation, the Kirkwood Teachers of Color Named Award supports graduating Kirkwood High School seniors who identify as Black, Indigenous or People of Color and plan to continue their education through two- or four-year colleges, technical programs or trade schools.
The evening offers a chance to enjoy a night of comedy and live entertainment while paying forward an opportunity for attendees to invest directly in students preparing to take the next step toward their futures.
“I believe that’s what we’re supposed to do,” Torry told The Bay State Banner about giving back to the community, both professionally and personally. “It’s about being a servant.”
Comedy for a Cause will take place at 6 p.m. (5:30 p.m. doors) at the Keating Theatre at Kirkwood High School. General admission tickets are $25 with an age recommendation of 18 and up. For more information, visit here for purchase tickets or for more information.
