Halle Bailey, singer and actress who rose to fame with her sister as part of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, has been chosen for the starring role in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. She will play the role of Ariel.
Chloe x Halle became internet sensations with their soulful covers of a host of songs – from Beyonce to Lil Wayne.
They caught the attention of Beyonce, who signed them to her label and has served as a mentor to the duo.
The decision for Halle Bailey to portray Ariel was made Wednesday morning.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall in a statement.
Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are among those in consideration for the production, which is planning for an airdate in early 2020.
