We’ve swung into summer, full speed ahead. I’m more of a fall/winter person, myself, but I do look forward to longer days and shorter shorts, amongst other perks of the season. Many of us have made the big wardrobe switch from sweaters and socks to sun dresses and sandals.
Local women’s apparel designer Brandin Vaughn of Classic Culture has released his summer collection. His mission is to provide trendsetting color and fabric combinations for the “classic” yet bold client. Founded in 2013, Classic Culture (CC) is also an umbrella for other designers.
“CC is a lifestyle brand catering to its customers for every occasion, bridging the gap between suburbia and urban cultures while remaining classic – elegant, with an edge,” Vaughn said.
This season, he has a full range of apparel types, including denim tops/dresses, knit cropped sweaters, colorful patterned skirts and tailored pants. When asked what his inspiration for this season’s line was, Vaughn highlighted his love for fabrics.
“For this particular line, I was inspired by my surroundings of color and different prints,” Vaughn said. “Rich fabrics are the main focus of the line. I let the fabric instead of the silhouette do the talking when I’m designing.”
In partnership with Vaughn, we have highlighted some of the summer’s hottest trends.
Denim on deck. Denim can be worn all year round. And even though the temperatures have taken the sweat factor up a notch, one can still throw on any item that is made of denim, whether it be a skirt, shorts or a top. Paired with a pop of complimentary color, like red, orange or yellow, the denim look screams “summer is here!”
Prints are it. Now, I know prints are a no-brainer trend when it comes to summer fashion, but it is important for one to choose wisely while playing with prints. Know what works best for the silhouette. If one is top-heavy, try prints on the bottom. If one doesn’t want to attract attention to the bottom portion of the body, opt for wearing printed dresses. Also, printed accessories are always the safe, but still eye-catching, way to incorporate the style into the summer wardrobe.
Go with the flow(y) tops. When it is 90 degrees outside, the last thing I want is clothes clinging to my body. Tops made out of lace, jersey or even a chiffon blend will provide one with optimum circulation. These tops are not just for casual wear either. They can be worn underneath a blazer or suit jacket to have a versatile business-day to party-night look. Tops made out of those particular fabrics can come in a wide variety of styles, ranging from tunics to crop tops.
Summer glam. Summer is not the time to wear 10 layers of concealer, foundation, bronzer, etc. One should opt for the least makeup possible. Even if you have acne or problem skin, focus on investing in quality skin care products from an esthetician rather than spending money on cover-up products that only clog the pores. “For this season, less highlight and contouring are definitely a must,” said local makeup artist Keisha Reece. “You want to opt for a more bronzed glow. Nude lips are still in, as well as colorful smoky eyes.”
