It was early – like, 4 a.m. early – but ya girl just couldn’t miss FOXY 95.5’s Tom Joyner’s Sky Show at the Roberts Orpheum on Friday. I wasn’t alone. People camped out for an overnight stay to get a good seat.
That meant they were close enough for Morning Show crew member J. Anthony Brown to crack on you. When he hit with his “look-a-likes,” he said an older, dark-skinned woman with an open face and gold tooth looked like Miss Jane Pitman.
Then he took it to a couple of our city’s heavyweights he must have met before the show. You just don’t diss Mike Roberts or Wayman Smith. J said Mike looked like Al B. Sure and Wayman looked like Frederick Douglass. He was hilarious.
Everyone had a good time shouting out their favorite club from back in the day – I kept hearing The Wiz and The Broadway. Don’t be surprised if you see one of them resurface soon in North County.
Comedian Bruce Bruce put it down, too. The other special guest entertainers, Ron Isley and Fantasia rocked, but Ron didn’t do too much singing. He mostly let his background singers and the crowd do the crooning. Maybe he was a little under the weather.
Fantasia was not. Girlfriend got down. She also made it to Annie Malone Children’s and Family Services Center for their barbecue fundraiser on Friday. And I hear she will be back in the Lou with Kem and Rashaan Patterson June 8 at the Fox. Tickets go on sale Saturday.
I had a good time kicking it at Annie Malone’s with Fantasia, Aloha and Q95.5’s PD Garth Adams, who hosted a live broadcast. In fact, I had a good time with all of the Q staff, from the Sky Show to brunch at the Roberts Mayfair to the barbecue.
The Q crew was in good spirits, and it wasn’t just because of the Joyner joint. FOXY beat out Majic in Arbitron’s Winter ‘O5 book. Garth knocked JR out the box. Of course, Joyner creamed Majic’s morning show, but Chaz held her own.
Speaking of holding your own, I learned that Mike Roberts Jr. recently spent his last day at the high-powered Armstrong Teasdale law firm and will be joining the Roberts Cos.
