Kids from the Shaw neighborhood recently painted a mural on the wall of Shaw Methodist Church. Donya Cooper, Aberielle Washington, Marissa Washington, Liam Conley and others helped add color to the mural that was created to help give kids ownership of the neighborhood. The church is located at the intersections of Shaw and Tower Grove on the near South Side.

Special Friends Extended Mentor Program recently held a mentor session at Jennings Junior High School. Professionals in the St. Louis region visited the school, met with their mentees, and facilitated an in-class lesson on showing leadership and being stakeholders in your own education. Holly Cousins, director of the program, congratulated Leon Miller, an eighth grader who was chosen as a top student in his class for demonstrating high academic performance, perfect attendance and good citizenship. He received the Principal’s Cup recently for these leadership qualities.

Billie McKindra Phillips, 87, has been recognized as an Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisans by St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors. She founded the art program at the School of Visual and Performing Arts and served as Supervisor of Art for St. Louis Public Schools. Her efforts grew enrollment in the art program at Sumner High School to more than 2,000 students. She continues to share her knowledge of art as a docent at the St. Louis Art Museum and with Mentor St. Louis.
