Three students in the Hazelwood School District were selected as finalist in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory contest, sponsored by the North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU).
Students, David Duncan and Catie Mertz of Hazelwood East High, and Maurice Taylor of Hazelwood Northwest Middle, were among twelve finalists chosen from surrounding school districts.
A panel of judges chose five winners, on Saturday, December 12 at John Knox Presbyterian Church. Each of the winners received a $100 prize.
Catie Mertz, of Hazelwood East High school, is among the winners of the oratory contest. Mertz, along with four other winners, will present her oratory at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, held in the Terry M. Fischer Theatre at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley on Sunday, January 17. The celebration will begin at 3 p.m.
