Now you may remember that we moved out to what some may call the country last year.
We figured out we had definitely left the city when, while on our way to visit the boys’ future schools, we passed by more cow pastures than cars.
The smell of manure tipped us off as well, and of course my boys had to exaggerate the impact the smell had on their nostrils.
“This is awful; it smells like some animal died.”
“I think my nose is going to fall off.”
“I wish my nose would fall off.”
They all went overboard as they expressed to my husband and I how terrible it would be having to live out in the country.
Oh, how the times have changed. This week is the county fair out in these here parts, and my family is ready, cowboy hats and all.
Each of those city-slicker boys of mine is singing a different tune.
Son number three had me sign him up for the pig chase contest. He said it sounded exciting to wrestle a freshly greased pig to the ground, all in the pursuit of a $10 bill and shiny new medal.
Not to mention the winner gets his picture in the local paper. A treat for any nine-year-old boy.
Sons number one and two have joined forces and decided to take on one of the fair’s most harrowing acts.
They entered the jalapeño-eating contest. No water, no juice – heck, they won’t even get to spit. Just eat as many jalapeños as they can before the bell goes off and you are declared the winner!
They don’t even get money or a medal if they win, just a bottle of seltzer for their aching bellies.
You would thing it was Christmas, they are so excited. They have even been practicing at home getting ready for the big day. I have yet to see them eat more than four jalapeños – collectively!
Son number four has decided not to enter any contest this year. But he is really excited about seeing the contestants compete for the championship crown in the cow-milking contest.
I thought about entering the pie-baking challenge, but they did not allow any Betty Crocker mix. It had to be homemade. Can you believe that?
What good, hard-working mother had time to make homemade pastries?
I was promptly shown a list of over 50 contestants.
Show offs.
Got to go. The last shuttle is about to leave, and I want to be first in line to see the tractor pull.
Thanks for sharing.
