I was once told the story about a college law professor who said that if you have the law on your side then you pound on the law, if you have the facts on your side then you pound on the facts, and if you have neither then you pound on the desk. Claire McCaskill is pounding a hole in the desk.

On November 7, I will, for the first time in my life, vote for a Republican. That person is Jim Talent. Talent has been working on urban and small business issues since he was in the House of Representatives. One of his major initiatives there was the Community Renewal Act, which fosters the creation and growth of new jobs for residents of the urban core.

Do people realize that in a generation, no one Democrat or Republican had brought sickle cell disease to the national forefront? Talent not only brought national attention to sickle cell, which disproportionately affects African Americans, but also has provided significant funding for 40 treatment centers.

On the issue of civil rights, Talent took the lead and created the Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act, which seeks to resolve and bring closure to crimes dating back to the Civil Rights Era.
