An additional 24 Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis houses have been awarded LEED Platinum Certification – bringing the total since 2008 to 51 houses. Another 17 Habitat homes are complete and pending certification.

Habitat proposed and is now in the running for a $250,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant to create a ‘Sustainable Learning Center.’ The ‘Learning Center’ would give St. Louisans an opportunity to learn about and participate in sustainable home construction.

The proposed ‘Sustainable Learning Center’ house would be constructed in the same manner as other Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis homes; built and certified under the USGBC’s LEED for Homes program. Each Build Day would be used as an educational opportunity to provide detailed information about the sustainable elements inHabitat houses, sustainable building principals and sustainable building practices.

The goal is to provide a living, working classroom for participants so they too can have the opportunity to physically construct and practice sustainable construction techniques while gaining the real world training of working on a LEED certified project.

Pepsi Refresh Grants are awarded based on a public vote this November. Voting can be done every day. There are three ways to vote for the Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis ‘Sustainable Learning Center’: 1-Text (text the number “103996” to Pepsi (73774) from a mobile phone) 2- Facebook (sign into a Facebook account and install the Pepsi Refresh Voting App.; Go to the application and search for “Habitat St.Louis”; Vote) 3- Pepsi Refresh website, www.refresheverything.com (click “Join Refresh Everything” in the bottom left corner; fill out the form; go to www.refresheverything.com/habitatstl; select Vote for this Idea).
