On Nov. 16, Northeast Ambulance and Fire protection district board members suspended Fire Chief Angelia Elgin indefinitely, according to board chairman Derek Mays.

At the meeting, the board announced a motion for an “employee A” to be put on disciplinary hearing, and then discussed the matter in closed session.

Mays said today the reasons are for allegations of gross misconduct and gross neglect of duty.

“It’s a personnel issue that is still pending, and I’m not at liberty to discuss it,” Mays said.

When asked whether the suspension could be permanent, he said, “This is a disciplinary issue. As far as I know, there are no constraints on the ability of the board to act.”

Deputy chief Bilal Olushola will be acting in Elgin’s absence.

When called for comment, Elgin told the St. Louis American that she will attending a prescheduled “Meet the Fire Chief” event on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Normandy School District Administrative building at 3855 Lucas and Hunt Road.

The North County Citizens Group had scheduled that event prior to the board’s

decision as a way for community leaders, residents and elected officials to meet Elgin, said group officials.

Elgin said she will address the issue at the event.

In response to the fire chief’s suspension, board member Rhea Willis said, “I expect a fair and thorough review and expect this matter to be resolved expeditiously.”
