Nearly 50 fire hydrants in St. Louis have been deliberately damaged and rendered inoperable, city fire and police officials said Sunday.
Police are investigating the damage and seeking those responsible. Authorities have not confirmed a motive or what is being done with parts removed from the hydrants.
Officials said functioning hydrants are critical to emergency response and urged anyone who sees someone tampering with a hydrant to call 911.
