A St. Louis inmate was transported from the City Justice Center to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Saturday, Division of Corrections Commissioner Doug Burris said in a statement.

Authorities identified the inmate as Samuel Hayes Jr.

Burris’ statement offered no details about the death but noted that St. Louis police are investigating.

Mayor Cara Spencer offered condolences to Hayes’ family and loved ones and said she supports the police investigation.

“My office is committed to ensuring accountability and a full review of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Spencer said. “I have been clear about my commitment to ensuring the safety of those in our care at the jail, and reforming the jail is one of my top priorities.”
