Gene Leon Lynn Campbell II, an employee of Major Brands, formerly of Human Development Corporation (HDC), died Saturday night after drowning at the Lake of the Ozarks. He was 24.
Campbell, the son of famed local singer and former lounge proprietor Gene Lynn, had reportedly been pushing a boat out the dock when he fell into the Lick Branch Cove.
He and friends, who traveled to St. Louis for the Labor Day weekend, went to the Ozarks to celebrate the holiday.
Campbell was known as a very good swimmer and had even been a lifeguard.
More so, Campbell was a golfer. He had been playing golf since age seven, competed in several tournaments and was about to teach at a golf academy in Florida. Growing up, he also played baseball, soccer and swam.
Campbell attended Pattonville High School and graduated from Marquette High School in St. Louis County. After high school, Campbell worked for five years at HDC, before taking a position at Major Brands.
He lived on the Hill, but had friends “around the world” his mother, Donna Campbell, said. She described him as bright and personable.
“He has a contagious personality and there wasn’t a person he met that he didn’t get along with,” she said.
Campbell was single and without children. He is survived by two stepsisters, Gina Jones and Angerrilyn Cutts, both of Florida.
Visitation for Campbell is at 9 a.m., Friday, at New Sunny Mount Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin there at 11 a.m.
