The Rev. Jonas Hubbard Jr., a retired minister in East St. Louis, died Jan. 8 of natural causes at his home in St. Louis. He was 87.

The Rev. Mr. Hubbard was born in Coldwater, Miss. He moved to St. Louis in 1940 and joined the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.

He was ordained in 1966. A year later, he began serving as pastor of Mount Paran Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis. At the church, he increased its membership, improved the building and initiated a variety of auxiliary groups. He retired in 1990.

The Rev. Mr. Hubbard was a member of the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis.

Among survivors are his wife, Mary Stanley Hubbard; three daughters, Barbara Jean McDonald of Denver, Doris Jean Knox of Chicago and Gloria Hubbard of St. Louis; two sons, Jonas Hubbard III and Rodney Hubbard, both of St. Louis; a sister, Fannie Bea Hubbard of Chicago; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great grandchildren.
