This week, Congressman Wm. Lacy Clay reminded backward-thinking legislators that the voter photo ID bill will certainly put the state in court – an embarrassment with which the Blunt administration apparently has no problem.
“This Republican-sponsored proposal would disenfranchise some of Missouri’s most vulnerable citizens in an attempt to fix a nonexistent problem. The real purpose of this deception by the Republican leadership is to use the legislative process to alter the outcome of two races on the November ballot: the election for U.S. Senator and the statewide initiative on Stem Cell research.”
Clay said the provisional ballot (the option that would be afforded voters without an ID at the polls, if the bill passes) “is unlikely to ever be counted (and is) an insult to our intelligence and the constitution.”
“As a former member of both chambers of the Missouri legislature, I know that good, dedicated individuals sit on both sides of the aisle. This is an opportunity for legislators from both parties to show that freedom and our constitutional rights should not be sacrificed for political advantage.”
