It looks like P-D- columnist Sylvester Brown has thrown a carrot to his conservative critics by revealing in one of his columns this week that he has considered buying a gun to protect himself. Brown said his thinking on this point stems from an incident at the Post where one of his many disgruntled readers tried to get into the office to see him without a proper introduction. There is an old saying that the EYE would like to pass on to Brown: If you are scared, call the Highway Patrol. Packing heat ain’t the answer.

On the other hand, thanks go out to Brown for devoting a column to the American’s most-recent front page. Any newspaper will take positive press whenever it can get it. He seemed genuinely surprised that the clergy had such prominent positions on 1A of the American. (By the way, the Black Church Week of Prayer for AIDS had been getting consistent coverage from us.) He struggled to understand why, but it’s really simple: it was news. That’s one of the American’s secrets of success n it reports the news relevant to our readers.
