Practice Area Attorney – Contracts
Ascension
In short, what do you do?
As Practice Area Attorney – Contracts, I provide counsel to The Resource Group, a subsidiary of Ascension and end-to-end supply change management organization that provides group purchasing organization (GPO) services. In this role, I prepare, evaluate and negotiate capital equipment and product agreements as well as other agreements with an emphasis on mitigating risk and identifying the organization’s rights and responsibilities.
Describe your team management/leadership style.
The most important thing I have learned about management/leadership style is that managing people cannot be thought of as a “one size fits all” endeavor. I believe that the team succeeds when you provide direction and leadership but also empower everyone to bring their talents to the forefront. Everyone feels more committed when they have autonomy and the ability to bring their true selves to work. When leaders do this, I think the team begins to function better and it sets the stage for collaboration.
What advice would you give to an aspiring female African-American college student, who is uncertain about entering law school?
While law school can be intimidating, the opportunities and possibilities afforded those who matriculate through law school are endless and boundless. In my opinion, the juris doctor degree is one of the most versatile advanced degrees. The things you learn in law school – how to advocate (for a client/position), how to write (effectively) and how to think (analytically) – are skills that are highly sought after and easily transferable to any number of professions.
Your service with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the YWCA focuses on creating opportunities for young people, especially young women. What brought this into focus for you?
I am a firm believer in the adage “to whom much is given, much is required”. I am blessed to have a supportive family and a huge “village” that has helped me become the person I am today. It is as a result of their support and examples that I am so passionate about giving back to my community. Young people are our most precious asset and as such, I look for opportunities to work with and encourage them to achieve their goals. I am fortunate to be a member of organizations and work for a company, Ascension, whose mission and values are consistent with my own and not only allow me the opportunity but encourage me to serve my community.
Favorite St. Louis restaurants?
I love food and make a point to try different cuisines. I thoroughly enjoyed Fleur de Lilies and was sad when it closed. Currently, my favorite restaurants are Scape, Tani and Thai Kitchen.
