The annual Gateway Scholars Football Classic in East St. Louis has been cancelled.

The four-game event, which was to take place on Saturday at Clyde C. Jordan Stadium has been reduced to an afternoon doubleheader.

In the featured game, host East St. Louis was scheduled to play Gadsden County from Havana, Florida. However, Gadsden County will not be making the trip which forced the cancellation of that game. It was supposed to be the home opener for the Flyers, who dropped a 22-21 decision to Bergen Catholic in New Jersey last week.

The third game of the Classic matched up Lift for Life Academy against Cahokia. That game will still take place, only it has been moved to Cahokia on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The first two games of the event will go on as scheduled. In the opener, Belleville East will take on host East St. Louis in a girls’ flag football game at 11 a.m. Following that game will be a boys’ game between Wheaton St. Francis from Illinois against Mt. Zion Prep out of Maryland.

East St. Louis will return to action on Friday, September 5 when it travels to Las Vegas to take on perennial national power Bishop Gorman. The Flyers will not play a home game until September 26 when they will host Belleville West in a Southwestern Conference game. It will be one of the only two games that the Flyers will play at home this season.
