District championship notes

The Francis Howell-Blue Springs matchup is the only area district championship game between two undefeated teams.

The Kirkwood-Eureka final will feature current Kirkwood head coach Farrell Shelton taking on his former team at Eureka. Shelton enjoyed a very successful run at Eureka before taking over Kirkwood’s program this season.

CBC and Hazelwood Central will be meeting for a district title for the third consecutive year. The two teams have split the last two meetings.

University City and St. Dominic both entered the postseason with losing records, but now they will square off for the Class 4, District 3 championship on Saturday.

The Class 2, District 5 final will feature a powerful Brentwood team that is 10-0 against a very hot Lutheran North team that has won six in a row and has averaged 58 points a game during that winning streak.

Illinois playoffs continue

The IHSA playoffs continue with second-round action. There are four metro east teams still alive in the postseason. Here is the schedule:

Class 4: Althoff (10-0) at Quincy Notre Dame (7-3), Saturday, 2 p.m.

Class 4: Mater Dei (7-3) at Columbia (10-0), Saturday, 1 p.m.

Class 5: New Lennox Lincoln Way (8-2) at Triad (9-1), Saturday, 3 p.m.

Tre Bryant re-opens recruitment

Standout running back Tre Bryant of CBC has decided to re-open the recruiting process. Bryant had originally committed to Kansas State, but now has changed that to a soft verbal. He took a visit to Minnesota last weekend and has a scheduled visit to Nebraska this weekend. The 5’11” 195-pound Bryant has rushed for 903 yards and scored touchdowns for the 11-0 Cadets, who will host Hazelwood Central for the Class 6, District 2 championship on Friday night.
