This weekend marks the end of the regular season for the schools on the Missouri side of the river. At this time next week, teams will be getting ready to compete in the district playoffs around the Show-Me State. Every team is guaranteed a game in Week 10 in the single-elimination district tournament.
As we close out the regular season, there are still eight teams on the Missouri side with undefeated records. They are CBC(8-0), Francis Howell (8-0), Fort Zumwalt North (8-0), Gateway STEM (8-0), Westminster (8-0), Brentwood (8-0), Kirkwood (7-0) and Eureka (7-0). Still undefeated on the Illinois side with 7-0 records are Edwardsville, Althoff, Triad and Columbia.
*One for the record books
Washington High senior Jared Rennick ram himself into the Missouri state record books with one unforgettable performance last Friday night. Rennick rushed for 361 yards and scored a state-record nine touchdowns in the Bluejays 84-57 victory over Wentzville Holt. That’s right, he scored nine touchdowns. In the same game, Holt quarterback Emilio Monsivais passed for 415 yards and six touchdowns.
*CBC gets tested
After scoring a series of blowout victories this season, top-ranked CBC finally received a challenge, courtesy of Christian Brothers of Memphis. The visiting Cadets trailed their brother school from Tennessee in the third quarter, but rallied to take a 28-21 victory. Senior running back Tre Bryant scored on a 48-yard touchdown run with four minutes to play to give CBC the victory.
*Great follow up performance
Two weeks ago, Hazelwood Central’s DeMontez Clark scored six touchdowns in the Hawks’ 40-20 victory over rival Hazelwood East. Clark was at it again, this time against Hazelwood West as he rushed for 376 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns in a 27-9 victory.
*Freshman of Influence
Freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman of Vianney has enjoyed an excellent first-year varsity campaign with the Golden Griffins. Coleman has 650 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. Last week, Coleman had six receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns in Vianney’s 49-28 victory over Farmington.
*Earl’s Pick Game of the Week
Summit (6-2) at Gateway STEM (8-0), Saturday, 1:30 p.m. – A very interesting non-conference battle that will get both teams ready for the district playoffs. Gateway STEM wrapped up the Public High League title last weekend with a 47-0 victory over Miller Career Academy. The Jaguars have shut out five of their last six opponents. The defense is led by Fabian Harris, who has four sacks and three interceptions; and Shaun Kyles, who has 10 sacks. Quarterback Antonio Cunningham and wide receiver Donnell Williams have hooked up for 11 touchdowns.
Summit will provide Gateway with its toughest competition of the season to date. The Falcons are 6-2 against a very rugged slate in the Suburban XII South Conference. The Falcons have a well-balanced offense, led by quarterback Brenden Keller (1,280 yards and 21 touchdowns), running back Sam Pennington (848 yards and seven touchdowns) and wide receivers Bam Gilmore and Jordan Haliburton (13 TD receptions combined). The defense is led by Andrew Bujnak.
