As high school basketball gets underway this week in the St. Louis area, here are some of the top girls to watch in St. Louis this season.
Jasmine Bailey (Normandy): All-around talent who led Vikings to the Class 5 Final Four last season.
Bianca Beck (Incarnate Word): Talented senior point guard who signed with Southeast Missouri State.
Raven Berry (Collinsville): Powerful 6’0” junior is one of the top post players in the metro east.
Kristen Burton (Jennings): Transfer from South Carolina should bolster the Warriors with her strong inside play.
Anya Covington (Edwardsville): Excellent 6’2” center who signed with Wisconsin last week.
Ebony Davis (Parkway South): Junior transfer from Metro who gives the Patriots an excellent presence inside.
Alneisha Day (North County Tech): A 5’10” sophomore transfer from Berkeley who is one of the state’s top young players.
Shelah Fields (Riverview Gardens): Talented junior guard who led the Rams to a breakthrough season in ’07.
Alisha Goodwin (Althoff): One of the top players in the metro east who signed with Saint Louis University.
Channon Haywood (Hazelwood East): Athletic 6’0” senior who has led the Spartans to two consecutive Final Four berths.
Jazmin Hill (Althoff): Sophomore transfer from O’Fallon should form an explosive backcourt with teammate Goodwin.
Patrice King (St. Joseph’s): Senior transfer from Chicago is a top point guard headed to Ball State.
Ciara Leak (Career Academy): Quick junior guard was a sparkplug in the Phoenix’s first district title in ’07.
Meghan Lewis (McCluer South-Berkeley): A four-year starter who has been the team’s scoring leader every year of her career.
