Who knew that just days ago when I penned an article asking to “Free Michael Dixon Jr.” that he was literally on his way out of town?

The suspended senior standout announced he was transferring from the University of Missouri and seeking to finish his collegiate basketball career at another school. Dixon’s decision was announced in a statement released by the university.

“It’s been a challenging few months and while I appreciate the support of many in the Mizzou community including my coaches and teammates,” Dixon said, “it’s in the best interest of me, my family and the University of Missouri to finish my career elsewhere.”

The decision comes after a whirlwind media blitz following former Mizzou player Kim English criticized the handling of Dixon’s suspension on Twitter. His comments prompted a reply for a woman who revealed the reason for Dixon’s suspension was due to accusations of rape she made in August. Boone County officials investigated the claims, but declined to press charges, citing lack of evidence. Still, Dixon had been placed on indefinite suspension by the basketball team, with no public timetable on his possible return.

After reports that a similar claim had been made in 2010 (again, no charges were filed), the Kansas City native determined there was too much distraction to finish his career in Columbia.

The loss will be a big blow Haith and the Tigers team as Dixon was expected to be a starter and a key cog in the offense. The unit will still receive a boost when Oregon transfer Jabari Brown becomes eligible in mid-December.

Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, Dixon’s transfer is probably the best solution for all parties involved. As an individual who has never been prosecuted or convicted of any crime, Dixon can hope a relocation will put the accusations behind him. For the team, the transfer will help end distractions over his suspension and the cloud of doubt and disdain that would be cast by some fans and critics.
