Each week, American columnist Maurice Scott will give a weekly update on the powerful East St. Louis Flyers football team, which is among the best teams in the state of Illinois.
The East Side football machine kept rolling with a 65-12 victory over host Collinsville last Friday night in a Southwestern Conference game. They eclipsed the 60-point mark for the fourth consecutive week in dismantling the Kahoks. East Side is averaging 52 points a game this season.
The Flyers are now 5-1 and 4-0 in conference play.
Junior tailback Courtney Molton rushed for 156 yards and scored three touchdowns. Quarterback Detchauz Ray completed 12 of 20 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver Kraig Appleton caught five passes for 118 yards and one touchdown while Terry Hawthorne had four receptions for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Appleton and Hawthorne were selected as the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Co-Players of the Week for their performances last Friday.
The Flyers will host Granite City on Friday night in another Southwestern Conference contest at Clyde C. Jordan Stadium. Kickoff is a 7 p.m.
On a side note, please say a prayer for Flyers’ junior linebacker Demond Hunt, who is Cardinal Glennon’s Children’s Hospital. Hunt suffered a head injury in Friday’s game and has been in the hospital for the past week. As of this printing, his condition had been upgraded to serious.
