Several local dignitaries were on hand at Sumner High School on Monday morning to participate in a special groundbreaking ceremony for a new outdoor athletic complex that will be constructed in Tandy Park.

The multi-purpose facility is being built through the partnership of the St. Louis Rams, the Anheuser-Busch Foundation and PHL, Inc. The renovation of Sumner’s athletic facility is the eighth project by PHL, Inc. in its efforts to rebuild the athletic facilities around the Public High League schools.

Sumner’s new facility will include a new football field with state-of-the-art Sprinturf, lights, bleachers and restrooms and a walking track, which will accommodate the Sumner High athletic teams, youth sports and the entire Ville community.

The new football field will be named the “Tuskegee Airmen Field,” while the newly renovated tennis courts will be renamed the “Arthur Ashe Memorial Tennis Court.” The street, Cottage Drive, where Sumner High sits, will also be renamed after Dr. Dennis Brantley, who was the former long-time principal at the school.
