The action around the St. Louis area continues this weekend with a bevy of excellent meets. Hopefully, there will be a little more cooperation from the weather as meets were either held under bad conditions or simply postponed.
Beginning today, the Ladue Invitational will be held at Chaminade at 4 p.m. On Friday, the Al Joyner Invitational will be held at Clyde Jordan Stadium in East St. Louis, beginning at 4 p.m. Top teams Cahokia and East St. Louis will highlight a field which will feature schools from the two-state area. The Comanches are coming off a dominant performance at the Granite City Invitational while the host Flyers will be ready for the big showdown on their home track.
The all-boys Fred Lyon Invitational will be held on Thursday and Friday at Parkway North, beginning at 3:30 p.m. both days. The all-girls Parkway West Invitational will also be held this weekend. The action begins on Friday at 4 p.m. and continues on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. The Dale Collier Invitational will be held at Kirkwood, beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. and continuing on Saturday at 9 a.m.
*The defending IHSA Class AA state champion Cahokia Comanches took their act on the road when the competed in the Meet of Champions in Mobile, Ala. Senior Ramon Gates finished first in the triple jump with an effort of 46 feet 8 inches. The Comanches finished second in four other events in a meet that featured some national competition.
Senior Clyed Young finished second in the 110-meter high hurdles and long jump. Young’s second-place jump was 23 feet 1 inch and his time in the hurdles was 14.2 seconds. Young has already turned in a natioally-ranked jump of 24 feet 8 inches at an indoor meet in Charleston, Ill. Sophomore Darien Donald finished second in the 400-meter dash (48.6 seconds) and junior London Davis finished third in the shot put (53-3).
