Competition on the Missouri side moves to the sectional phase for large schools while the small schools head to Jefferson City this weekend for the Class 1-2 State Championships. The state meet will be held on Friday and Saturday at Lincoln University, beginning at 11 a.m. both days. The Class 4 sectional meets will be held at Parkway South, Chaminade and Camdenton while Class 3 area teams will be competing at Farmington and MICDS. All sectional meets will be held on Saturday. The top four finishers in each sectional meet will head to Jefferson City for the Class 3-4 State Championships on May 25-26.

Here are some of the top performers from last weekend’s district meets around the area.

Alishea Usery (McCluer South-Berkeley): Won the 100, 200- and 400-meter dashes at the Class 3, District 3 meet at MICDS. She also anchored the 4×400-meter relay team to a first-place finish.

Denodus O’Bryant (Washington): Won the 100, 200, 400 and anchored the 4×400 relay to a first-place finish at the Class 4, District 2 meet at Kirkwood.

Alana Gray (Hazelwood East): Won the 100-meter high hurdles, long jump and finished second in the 300-meter low hurdles at the Class 4, District 4 meet at McCluer North.

Bryson Banks (MICDS): Won the long jump and triple jump (47 feet 6 inches) at the Class 3, District 3 meet at MICDS. Banks led the Rams to the district title.

Diona Graves (Kirkwood): Won the 100, 200 and anchored the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relays to first-place finishes at the Class 4, District 2 meet at Kirkwood.

Tyler Shaw (Lutheran North): Won the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles at the Class 3, District 3 meet at MICDS.

Michael Clark (Sumner): Won the 100 and anchored the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relays to first-place finishes at the Class 4, District 3 meet at Parkway West.

Darwin Price (Normandy): Won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs and anchored the 4×800-meter relay to a first-place finish at the Class 4, District 4 meet at McCluer North.

James Coleman (Marquette): Won the shot put and discus (184 feet 1 inch) at the Class 4, District 3 meet at Parkway West.

Paris Daniels (Normandy): Won the 200 and 400 at the Class 4, District 4 meet at McCluer North.

Cydney Ross (Villa Duchesne): Won the 800 and 1,600-meter runs at the Class 3, District 3 meet at MICDS.

Norris Johnson (McCluer North): Won the 100, 200 and anchored the 4×200 meter relay to a first-place finish at the Class 4, District 4 meet at McCluer North.

*On the Illinois side, the IHSA Class A and AA girls state championships will be held this weekend in Charleston, Ill. The competition begins at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. East St. Louis qualified athletes in nine individual events and three relays in winning the sectional championship at Belleville West. Junior RoNecia Nash won the 100 (11.7), 200 (24.2) and anchored the Flyerettes’ 4×200 relay team to a victory.

Cahokia’s Jere Richardson looked impressive in winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.2 seconds and the 300-meter low hurdles in 43.3. The Comanches also won the 4×100 and 4×400.

The IHSA boys sectionals will be held on Friday with area teams competing at Belleville East and Chatham Glenwood. Defending state champion Cahokia will highlight the Belleville East field while 2006 runners-up East St. Louis will headline the Chatham-Glenwood field. The action gets underway with prelims at 4 p.m. at both places.
