The Vashon Wolverines are set to meet the John Burroughs Bombers on Saturday in an All-St. Louis boys Class 4 state championship game.
Vashon defeated Kansas City Central 69-52 in its semifinal game while John Burroughs defeated Logan Rogersville 46-42 to punch its ticket to the state championship game. Tip off for today’s state final is at 4 p.m. at the Mizzou Arena on the campus of the University of Missouri.
Vashon is seeking its fourth consecutive Class 4 state championship. The Wolverines dominated Central from start to finish as they built a 24-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and coasted from there.
Freshman guard Jimmy McKinney III led the Wolverines with 16 points, including three of five shooting from 3-point range. He is the son of former Vashon High star and Mizzou standout Jimmy McKinney Jr. Senior Nassir Binion scored 15 points, junior Trey Williams Jr had 12 points and 6’8” junior Nicholas “Butta” Randall had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
While Vashon has made it an annual ritual to advance to the Final Four, John Burroughs is making its first appearance in the Final Four since 1953. The Bombers were able to outlast Logan Rogersville in a game that was close from start to finish.
Junior forward DJ Johnson came off the bench to score a game-high 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Tristan Reed had nine points and 10 rebounds while senior Ramzi Salem had eight points.
