Hometown boxing star Devon Alexander “the Great” and Marcos “El Chino” Maidana both made weight in advance of their Saturday night showdown in St. Louis.
Both fighters are making their welterweight (147lbs) debuts after campaigning as junior welterweights (140lbs) for the past several years. Alexander received cheers from the crowd as he was announced before stepping on the scales.
Coming off a two highly disputed decision victories, with a loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. in between, Alexander (22-1, 13KO) will need to step up his game to defeat the heavy-handed, hard-charging Maidana (31-2, 28KO). Tickets are still available for the bout, which will be held at the Scottrade Center. The bout will also be televised on HBO’s Boxing After Dark.
On the undercard, both Adrien Broner (22-0, 18KO) and Eloy Perez (23-0-2, 7KO) both made weight as well. During the face-off, Broner grabbed Perez’s neck and appeared to tell him that he would win via knock out. The fighters were quickly separated and there never seemed to be any real danger of a brawl. Broner then proceeded to do his best “Money” Mayweather impression by showing off his necklace and watch by putting them on before his pants and shirt. Perez laughed off the gestures.
Oscar De La Hoya, Evander Holyfield and Roy Jones Jr. were all reportedly in the house.
