Mark McGwire is suddenly the best thing to ever happen to Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds was called before a federal grand jury in 2004, and he didn’t run away and hide through his attorneys. He not only attended, he admitted that, without his knowledge, he had indeed used two forms of steroid.
He raised his right hand, placed his hand on the Bible and proceeded to face up to his day in a hearing room.
Now, it is McGwire’s turn to answer some very embarrassing questions. But Big Mac doesn’t want to testify before a congressional committee investigating steroid use in Major League Baseball. As of press time on Wednesday, there was no word if McGwire would show up for hearings today (March 17) on Capital Hill.
Bonds was a stand-up guy, regardless of how you feel about him, his attitude or his steroid use.
McGwire has thumbed his nose at Congress, baseball fans and the media.
For the first time in a long time, Bonds is not the worst-looking guy when it comes to the steroid controversy, thanks to McGwire.
McGwire is also suddenly Bonds’ best buddy because a lot of the ridiculous “asterisk” talk has been silenced. Many a fan and media member who want to ignore Bonds’ race to the all-time home run record and place an asterisk by his record 73 home runs in a single season are now quiet.
Why?
That’s easy. If Bonds gets the asterisk, so does McGwire. If 73 gets the star of guilt, so does 70. By the way, the SportsEye found it interesting that members of the late Roger Maris’ family immediately came to McGwire’s defense when Canseco’s book was published. How does the Maris family feel now? Where was a defense of Bonds from the Maris family?
The latest allegations against McGwire printed by the New York Daily News, the Jose Canseco tell-all book and McGwire’s refusal to testify before Congress certainly do not make McGwire guilty. However, his stance on the steroid issue makes him look hideous, even worse than Bonds.
Bonds couldn’t be happier.
