It’s about time University of Missouri system president Elson Floyd voiced some displeasure with the antics surrounding the basketball team in Columbia.
Floyd has called for an independent investigation of the dismissal/resignation/termination/retirement of one Quin Snyder, the former coach. Floyd pretty much lost control of the basketball program when former Tiger and still-troubled Ricky Clemons lost control of the ATV he was riding on the Fourth of July of 2004 at Floyd’s residence. Clemons was supposed to be in jail at the time, but hey, it was a holiday.
Since that time, Floyd has remained silent as the wheels fell off the basketball program. There were violations of NCAA statutes, questionable recruiting of questionable young men and hideous play on the court.
Floyd’s wife’s comments on other Mizzou officials in athletic and administrative offices was never adequately addressed and that has left the university’s president open to ridiculous allegations that his is “a racist.”
Speaking of stupid comments, how about this Kevin Young’s gem after the tail whippin’ at Kansas last Saturday.
“We are on scholarship to play basketball. We’re not on scholarship to go to journalism school or write papers,” the so-called student athlete said.
That’s a unique perspective on education, to say the least. It is also Missourians’ tax dollars at work, which isn’t funny at all.
So, now that Floyd has put his foot down, let’s hope no one else at the University of Missouri decides to put a foot in their mouth until the investigation is complete.
That, however, is probably too much to ask from a basketball program that has bounced completely out of its orbit.
