The Major League Baseball investigation of steroid use since 2002 is a bold attempt to throw Barry Bonds under the bus of fan disgruntlement. Too bad this attempt to scapegoat Bonds will also drag in Gary Sheffield and Jason Giambi.

Commissioner Bud Selig figures that most fans hate the non-repentant Bonds. He also knows that Bonds will most likely surpass Babe Ruth’s 714 home runs long before the investigation releases its results.

So, an entire generation of steroid users – including St. Louis’ own Mark McGwire – will get a free pass while Bonds is put on the griddle.

Bonds made his bed and he must now lay in it. But it’s obvious that this investigation is more about blaming 15 or more scandalous years on Bonds and BALCO than it is about getting to bottom of what happened in baseball from the early 1990s until the present day.
