St. Louis CITY SC didn’t put one away Wednesday night — but they didn’t have to. Their 0-0 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Energizer Park was enough to punch their ticket back to the MLS Cup Playoffs. The draw also stretches their unbeaten run to 21 matches across all competitions, the longest streak the league has ever seen.
The point also marked CITY SC’s first playoff appearance since its inaugural 2023 season, a milestone that landed with the weight of a team that has spent the last two months refusing to break.
Head coach Yoann Damet didn’t hide his pride afterward — not in the result, but in the way his team earned it.
“There are a lot of good things that happened tonight,” he said during the postgame press conference. “Clinching the playoffs is one of them. Today is 21 unbeaten… and a clean sheet against a top team that’s been at the top of the conference all season.”
The matchup had the feel of a late‑season test between two clubs sitting near the top of the Western Conference. Vancouver came out strong, pressing early and forcing CITY SC to settle into the match slowly.
“Our head was a little bit underwater to start the first half,” Damet said. “But we grew in the game, and in the second half, the game was a lot more for us.”
CITY SC finished with nine shots — four on target — while holding Vancouver to 17 attempts with none on goal, a defensive effort Damet credited to the collective discipline his players have built over the season.
Roman Bürki recorded his fifth clean sheet, backed by a back line that stayed organized even as the intensity rose.
“The team has been defending really well for a big chunk of the season,” Damet said. “You have to be collectively in sync, but you also have individually to win your battle and be sharp for 90 minutes.”
The unbeaten run is a reflection of how the team has responded to pressure, injuries, and the expectations that come with chasing trophies.
Defender Timo Baumgartl said the group set high goals before the season — and checking off a playoff berth is only part of the plan.
“We checked another box,” he said. “We want to hunt the highest spot on the table… and we need to be ready for the playoffs because these games will count.”
Baumgartl also pointed to the team’s summer additions, including Rafael Navarro, Carlo Holse and Alex Mățan, as key pieces that strengthened CITY SC’s rhythm and confidence.
“They give us something special,” he said. “You can see the self‑confidence growing.”
CITY SC won’t have long to savor the moment. The club travels to Minnesota United FC on Saturday, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. CT.
With six matches left — including a cup final — Damet said the experience from nights like Wednesday will matter.
“If we want to keep pushing toward the top, we need to go through these moments,” he said. “The players care so much… and tonight felt a little bit different than any other game.”
