Houston – For most of Saturday night, St. Louis CITY SC looked destined to leave Houston with a point and little else. Ninety minutes came and went. So did six minutes of stoppage time.

Then Lukas MacNaughton delivered the kind of moment teams carry with them into the postseason.

With one final push before the whistle, MacNaughton found the back of the net in the seventh minute of stoppage time to lift CITY to a 1-0 victory over Houston Dynamo FC at Shell Energy Stadium and lock up third place in the Western Conference heading into the MLS Cup Playoffs.

A scoreless draw seemed all but certain until Alex Mățan slipped a ball into the box in the closing seconds. MacNaughton was there to finish the chance, turning CITY’s lone shot on goal of the night into one of its most meaningful goals of the season.

The match appeared headed for a scoreless draw before Alex Mățan found MacNaughton in the closing seconds. The center back finished cleanly from the middle of the box for his third goal of the season and the latest game-winning goal in club history.

The dramatic finish capped what interim head coach Yoann Damet viewed as a fitting end to the regular season.

“It was a great night,” Damet said afterward. “It’s a nice way to wrap up the regular season, to finish third on Decision Day and to do it away, getting a clean sheet, scoring at the last minute and having a very good performance on the road.”

The scoreline suggests a tightly contested affair, but Houston controlled much of the statistical battle. The Dynamo outshot CITY 23-13 and put six shots on target. St. Louis managed only one shot on goal all night.

Fortunately for CITY, that lone shot was enough.

The visitors leaned on a disciplined defensive effort and timely goalkeeping from Ben Lundt before making the most of their final opportunity. When Mățan’s late service found MacNaughton near the top of the box, the defender seized the moment.

For Damet, the goal reflected qualities he believes have defined the club throughout the season.

“I think it shows the desire of this group, the passion, the togetherness that this group has shown all season,” Damet said. “Sometimes things happen like that. I think it happens for a reason.”

The victory also gave St. Louis the regular-season series win over Houston and sent the club into the playoffs with confidence, although Damet stopped short of declaring the result a momentum-builder.

The coach acknowledged the positive feeling surrounding the dramatic win but was quick to point out that postseason soccer is its own challenge.

“I don’t think momentum right now will carry over in two weeks,” Damet said. “The playoffs are a different competition.”

CITY’s focus now turns to a first-round playoff matchup against LAFC, one of the Western Conference’s perennial contenders. Dates and match times are expected to be announced later.

The win may not guarantee postseason success, but it provided exactly the kind of ending teams hope for before the playoffs begin: a clean sheet, a road victory and a reminder that matches are never over until the final whistle.
