St. Louis-area men can receive free prostate cancer screenings and other health tests Aug. 29 at Delmar DivINe.
The St. Louis Men’s Health Education & Screening Event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Berges Conference Center, 5501 Delmar Blvd. The free event is being organized by the Prostate Conditions Education Council.
Testing will include PSA blood tests used to help screen for prostate cancer, along with checks of testosterone, cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose.
PCEC is especially hoping to reach African American men, veterans, men 40 and older and those with a family history of prostate cancer. Women and other family members and caregivers also can attend.
Black men are about 70% more likely than White men to develop prostate cancer and more than twice as likely to die from it. Because of the higher risk, the American Cancer Society recommends that Black men talk with their doctor about PSA screening starting at age 45 — and as early as 40 for those with a strong family history of the disease.
The PCEC screenings do not require participants to have insurance.
“Our goal is to remove barriers to care by bringing trusted physicians, community organizations and free health services together in one welcoming location,” PCEC Outreach Coordinator Lizzy Townsend said.
Attendees also can talk informally with Dr. Lannis Hall and local urologists, hear from prostate cancer survivors and connect with community health resources. Boxed lunches will be provided.
